Vortices in Turbulence

Vortex Motion

Abstract

Some recent work of Perry and Chong (1981, 1982) is reviewed concerning the structure of wall turbulence. In this work it was assumed that wall shear flow can be modelled as a “forest” of hair-pin or “Λ” shaped vortices which are embedded in an irrotational flow field. By making certain plausible assumptions regarding the velocity and length scale distributions of these vortices, the mean flow field, broad-band turbulence intensity distributions and spectra are derived which are consistent with measured data. Much of this modelling was inspired by the smoke tunnel observations of Head and Bandyopadhyay (1981), Perry, Lim and Teh (1981) and Perry and Chong (1982).
