Abstract

The arguments for a relativistic fireball model of gamma-ray bursts are reviewed, and an outline is given of the relativistic impulsive and wind flow formulations, in which dissipative shocks are thought to produce the nonthermal spectra observed. We discuss the main results obtained from analytic approximations, as well as the questions of radiative efficiency, spectrum formation, and the late evolution of impulsive or wind flows leading to gamma-ray burst remnants. We also discuss some recent numerical calculations of external deceleration shocks.
