Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag schlägt eine neue Theorie des Populären vor. Sie wird in Auseinandersetzung mit bisherigen Theorien zur populären Kultur entfaltet (etwa von älteren Bestimmungen zu ‚Volk‘ und ‚Masse‘ und neueren wie u. a. denen von Frankfurter Schule und Cultural Studies). Ausgangspunkt ist die Beobachtung, dass sehr oft Populäres behauptet wird, indem man eine Mengenangabe präsentiert: etwas sei häufig beachtet, viel gesehen, als Meinung genannt worden etc. Nach dem Vorbild der politischen Wahl und der Darstellung ihrer Ergebnisse werden solche quantitativen Angaben in Ranglisten des Populären (Charts, Bestseller, Einschaltquoten, Trending Topics etc.) versammelt, die das Häufigste hervorheben und isolieren. Einzelne Angaben von Wahlergebnissen sowie die Ranglisten des Populären erfahren in der Gegenwart ihrerseits nicht selten eine große Beachtung. Behauptung des Populären heißt darum: Unterstellt wird ebenso der Wirklichkeitsgehalt wie auch die Bedeutsamkeit der Zahlenangaben – und nicht zuletzt deshalb dominieren sie in der Gegenwart regelmäßig die Vorstellungen, was populär sei und was nicht.
