Knee Arthroplasty: An Asian Perspective

Essentials of Cemented Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder affecting the elderly throughout the world. Almost all prosthetic implants have been designed and manufactured to accommodate the knee anatomy of Caucasians, and there is some doubt about the application of these TKA prostheses systems in Asians. Beyond the mere size, there are many differences in various anatomic parameters between Asian and Caucasian knees, affecting the fit of current prostheses in Asian knees. As such, it is clearly necessary to have specifically designed TKA prostheses systems for Asian populations. Another consideration in Asian knee prostheses is their need for more flexion than their Western counterparts, given the differences in cultural and lifestyle factors necessitating greater flexions in Asians for functionality and operative satisfaction. As such, achieving deep flexion after TKA, although not as important as the technical consideration, is also a significant point to consider in prosthesis design.
