Abstract
The skin is a complex organ that harbors a multitude of different cell types and protects the body from external insults. During the past decade, we have gained important insight into the dynamic interplay between immune and non-immune cells required to protect the skin from physical stress, toxins, and pathogens, while maintaining self-tolerance. Even minute dysregulation of this interplay can lead to allergy, autoimmunity, and cancer formation, with detrimental consequences. A thorough understanding of skin immunity therefore facilitates an understanding of the pathophysiology of skin diseases as well as the implementation of innovative treatment concepts.
