Zusammenfassung
In diesem Kapitel geht es um das Umschreiben von DNA in RNA – die Transkription (lat. trans für „hinüber“, scribere für „schreiben“). Dabei ist die Transkription der erste Schritt der Genexpression, dem Prozess, bei welchem aus der genetischen Information ein funktionelles Produkt entsteht. Die Genexpression von Proteinen besteht aus der Transkription (DNA → messenger-RNA, kurz mRNA) und der anschließenden Translation (mRNA → Protein; Kap. 7). Die Genexpression ist, wenn man so will, der Prozess, der den Genotyp mit dem Phänotyp verbindet. Doch nicht nur Gene für Proteine, sondern auch Gene für funktionelle RNAs, wie zum Beispiel die ribosomalen RNAs (rRNAs) oder Transfer-RNAs (tRNAs), werden transkribiert, da auch sie als Information auf der DNA gespeichert sind.
