Zusammenfassung
Das zentrale Thema der Teratologie, die „angeborenen Anomalien“ bei Kindern, beschäftigt die Gesellschaft und die Medizin seit jeher und die oft verzweifelte Suche nach klaren Ursachen hat bis heute nichts an Brisanz verloren. Bei ca. 2 von 3 Kindern mit angeborenen Gesundheitsproblemen lässt sich noch immer keine klare Kausalität bestimmen, sodass viel Platz für Spekulation und Irrationalität bleibt. Die Plazenta spielt als wichtigstes Kontaktorgan des Embryos bzw. Fetus mit der „Außenwelt“ zweifellos eine bedeutende Rolle, wenn es darum geht, exogene schädigende Einflüsse auf die vorgeburtliche Entwicklung zu verstehen und entsprechende teratologische Risiken korrekt einzuschätzen. Anhand der Wilson’schen „Grundregeln der Teratologie“ lassen sich die vielfältigen Verstrickungen der Plazenta in der Teratologie beleuchten und aktuelle, sowie zukünftige, diagnostisch oder therapeutisch relevante Aspekte erkennen.
