Die wichtigsten zellulären Ribonucleinsäure-Typen sind: Boten- oder messenger-RNA (mRNA), ribosomale RNA (rRNA), Transfer-RNA (tRNA) und small nuclear RNA (snRNA). Bausteine für die RNA-Synthese sind Adenosintriphosphat (ATP), Guanosintriphosphat (GTP), Cytidintriphosphat (CTP) und Uridintriphosphat (UTP).
