Zusammenfassung

Eine Osteomyelitis umfasst alle durch Infektionen ausgelösten entzündlichen Prozesse im Knochen, die Elemente des Knochengewebes zerstören können. Da vielfach nicht nur Osteomyelon (Knochenmark), sondern auch Periost, Spongiosa und Kortikalis des Knochens betroffen sind, sind Begriffe wie Ostitis oder Osteotitis für Knocheninfektionen zutreffender, haben sich bisher jedoch nicht durchgesetzt. Osteomyelitiden können Ursache und Folge unterschiedlichster Infektionen sein und sind auch hinsichtlich der klinischen Präsentation und der notwendigen Behandlungen eine sehr heterogene Gruppe von Knochenerkrankungen.
