Zusammenfassung
Das Kapitel behandelt als erstes Rahmenbedingungen, die während der Entstehung der Biotech-Industrie vorherrschten, vor allem in den USA. Dort wurde sehr früh begonnen interdisziplinär zu forschen und einige der wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Biotechnologie aufzuklären. Zudem trugen das politische, gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Umfeld zum Aufkommen einer KMU-geprägten Biotech-Industrie bei. Insbesondere neue Gesetze ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre, wie der Bayh-Dole Act, der Stevenson-Wydler Act oder der Economic Recovery Tax Act, schufen Rahmenbedingungen, die die wirtschaftliche Nutzung biowissenschaftlicher Forschungsergebnisse sehr unterstützten. Auch das Risikokapital, ein Lebenselixier für Firmengründungen, wurde sozusagen in den USA erfunden und Investoren interessierten sich früh und intensiv für die Biotechnologie. Als weiteren Schwerpunkt bietet das Kapitel dann einen zusammenfassenden, aber dennoch umfangreichen Rückblick zur Entstehung der US-Biotech-Industrie sowie eine Einschätzung des aktuellen Status quo. Die Branche hat heute eine hohe wirtschaftliche Bedeutung und viele Innovationen hervorgebracht. Dank eines investitionsfreundlichen Kapitalmarktes ist sie ausreichend finanziert, um hochrisikoreiche, teure und langwierige Arzneimittel-Entwicklungen an den Markt zu bringen. Mittlerweile verschwimmen die Grenzen zwischen Biotech- und Pharma-Firmen zu einer neuen biopharmazeutischen Industrie. Auch andere Industrien, wie die Chemische Industrie, werden in Zukunft zunehmend „biologisiert“ werden, wie das Kapitel zum Schluss aufzeigt. Biotechnologie gilt daher auch als Querschnitts- und Zukunftstechnologie.
