Abstract
Topical treatment with glucocorticoids began 20 years after the discovery of the basic structure of cholesterol, a precursor in the biosynthesis of all steroids. The application of cortisone directly on the skin showed disappointing therapeutic results, but the fermentation of this molecule resulted in hydrocortisone, a great therapeutic advance at the time of its introduction in 1952.
