Abstract

An accurate appraisal of the present state of knowledge concerning the biogenesis of griseofulvin (2 S, 6′R)-7-chloro-4,6,2′-trimethoxy-6′-methylgris-2′-en-3,4′-dione (I; R = Cl) is far from easy. The literature abounds with speculation and with statements unsupported by published detailed experimental work; and the assumption has sometimes been made that a partial biosynthetic pathway established for one griseofulvin-producing organism or strain is necessarily true of another organism or strain.
