Summary
A quantitative gaschromatographic method for the determination of benzene and toluene in blood is described. By using a closemeshed steel sieve in the injector block and a flame ionization detector no chemical preparation of the blood is needed. So the total length of the analysis is less than 10 minutes. The retention times of benzene and toluene were 3.8 minutes and 6.4 minutes, respectively (carrier gas flow: 40 cm3/min, column temperature: 130°C. The 10 feet 26” column (0.2” i.d.) was charged with 10% dioctylsebacinat on chromosorb W (42/60 mesh).
Calibration curves were linear. The detection limit was 2 × 10–5 µl or 2 µl/100ml blood for both solvents. Therefore 0.06 ml blood taken with a microhaematocrit capillary from the lobe of the ear was sufficient for the analysis. Assays upon exposed rabbits were performed.
