Summary
13 healthy persons—18 to 40 years old—breathed room-air or a mixture of 20.9% O2, 5% Ar, rest N2, then the same mixture with 5 ppm NO2 and finally room-air again in three consecutive periods of 15 min.
The following measurements were performed:
-
1.
f, V̇E, VT and V̇O2,
-
2.
PaO2, PaCO2, pHa, Pv̄O2, PvCO2 and pHv̄,
-
3.
PAO2, PACO2 and PAAr; the ventilation quotient V̇A/VA for one or two compartments, the diffusing capacity DLO2 app., the AaD-O2 and aAD-CO2,
-
4.
heart rate, cardiac output, stroke volume and systolic pulmonary artery pressure,
-
5.
lung-scintigrams before and after inhalation of NO2.
As a relevant finding of this study PAO2 remained unchanged, while PaO2 decreased significantly. The resulting increase of AaD-O2 was accompanied by a significant increase of Pa pulm sy. 10 min after NO2-ninhalation initial values were reached again.
