Acute Renal Failure in Asia

  • Chapter
Nephrology

Abstract

Acute renal failure (ARF) is an important nephrological disorder in most Asian countries, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Over the years the etiology of ARF has undergone considerable changes, particularly in Europe and developed Asian nations like Japan. In these developed countries ARF due to infection and septic abortion has practically disappeared, whereas, even today, infections of one kind or another, caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses, various toxins, and septic abortion remain as the major causes of ARF in most Asian countries. In addition, ARF following hypersensitivity reactions due to drugs, ARF due to immunological disorders such as primary glomerulonephritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) nephritis, and ARF due to hematological disorders such as myelomatosis etc. is as common in Asian countries as it is in Europe and in the United States. In this communication, we will briefly review different aspects of ARF in relation to Asia.
