Abstract
The lack of useful light absorption or emission properties of histamine (Lewis, Gebauer-Fuelnegg and Farmer, 1933) has required that non-biological methods of measuring it be based upon the properties of derivatives prepared by various chemical reactions. Pure histamine in solution may be quantified by each of several different chemical methods, but the assay of biological materials usually requires the purification of histamine before any chemical determination can be satisfactorily applied. Moreover, purification of the histamine derivative before measurement is necessary in some methods. In this discussion the preliminary purification procedures will be considered separately from the principles of reactions and reagents employed in the various chemical determinations. Finally representative procedures for each of the more useful methods will be presented in detail.
