Summary
Plasma and muscle intracellular free amino acid concentrations were quantified in 15 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and 36 healthy control subjects. Most essential and some nonessential amino acids were decreased in plasma. These changes probably reflect metabolic and nutritional derangements of uremia rather than the modest losses into peritoneal dialysate. A few nonessential amino acids are increased in plasma and muscle. The distribution of several amino acids between plasma and intracellular fluid was abnormal in these patients. Taurine concentration in muscle was markedly reduced indicating depletion of this amino acid.
