Abstract
Inhabitants of larger rivers and lakes of North America from southern Canada to Costa Rica. Nine recent species in two supraspecific monophyla — Lepisosteus and Atractosteus (WILEY 1976). Lepisosteiformes is a synonymous group name for the meter-long gars that are often compared in body shape and lifestyle with the pike Esox lucius. Both here and there, dorsal fins and anal fins are displaced far backwards to the base of the tail (Fig. 75E). In this way, the power for lightning quick attacks from a still ambush arises — for catching prey as a predator. In Lepisosteus there is also a long, forceps-like snout.
