Abstract
This chapter will illustrate possible Internet synergy possibilities for fieldbus-based systems such as Distributed Control Systems (DCSs) and Field Control Systems (FCSs). Following a brief introduction to the evolution of control systems and the emergence of fieldbuses, the motivation for an Internet synergy solution and the advantages it can offer will be elaborated. Two supporting application cases will also be presented. The first application is concerned with the remote monitoring and control of a DCS via the Internet. The second application explores the notion of Knowledge-based (KB) control, applied to a number of fieldbus-based systems through the dissemination of expert knowledge via the Internet.
