Zusammenfassung

Die Entwicklung der Depressionstherapie mit Arzneimitteln bildet ein besonders anschauliches Beispiel für den Wandel medizinischen Denkens. Gemäß der antiken Humoralpathologie beruhte die ÉMelancholieÉ auf einer krankhaften Säftemischung (Dyskrasie) mit Üb erhandnehmen der schwarzen Galle, was konzeptuell folgerichtig die Gabe von ÉaustreibendenÉ bzw. ableitenden Mitteln erforderte. Hierzu diente häufig die Nieswurz. Die Rolle, die dieser Pflanze zugeordnet wurde, zeigt die erstaunliche Kontinuität vieler medizinischer Therapieverfahren: Noch Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts empfahlen pharmakologische Handbücher die Nieswurz gegen depressive Verstimmungen. Auf eine ähnlich lange Tradition kann auch die Opiumbehandlung der Depression zurückblikken.
