Non-coplanar, Overcrowded Aromatic Hydrocarbons

  • Chapter
Polycyclic Hydrocarbons

Abstract

There are already indications that anthracene in the crystalline state is not completely coplanar. Deviations of 0·012 Å of the meso-C-atoms have been recorded and explained by the interaction of adjacent molecules in the crystal.1 This obviously does not apply to the molecule in solution or in the gaseous state.
