Summary
An environment has been developed and implemented, which supports the retrieval by content as well as the subsequent browsing and processing of medical images. The type and ordering of processes executed under this environment for the above tasks are totally transparent to the user. This highly interactive and flexible environment is based on efficient retrieval strategies and can be used over an existing PACS in order to facilitate the access of reference or other medical images in an image database. In this paper, we focus our attention on the graphical tools and user interfaces which are at the core of this environment. We show how it is possible to use new (graphic) tools instead of complex query languages and text based (keyword) retrievals. We also give examples of retrievals performed by the system and describe the strategies and access methods used.
