Summary

Background of PACS in Japan is high growth rate of diagnostic machine installations such as computed radiography, CT and MRI, in addition to many HIS operations such as ordering systems. Potential motive force would be future society of high rate of the aged population which is inevitable in Japan.

PACS operations in Japan are now growing up, in spite of less paying attention to sincere evaluation of PACS. Statistics tells more than 150 systems involving stand alone filing and teleradiology have been installed in Japan. Major operation of PACS in large hospital linked with HIS is that in Hokkaido University Hospital. Examples of other operations are introduced.

Difference of PACS in Japan from that in USA or in Europe would be pointed as follows: many stand alone systems, integration requirement with HIS rather than RIS, weak motivation to teleradiology, and rather strong move to radiotherapy PACS.

New wave of PACS in Japan is ISAC (image save and carry) employing 5.25 inches magneto-optical disks. Other topics will be briefly discussed in this paper. Problems to be solved are further promotion of standardization and technology assessment especially in computed radiography such as quality of chest image.
