The Outcome of the Stateness Problem: The Case of Kosovo

Abstract

The attention of this chapter was centered on the outcome of the stateness problem experienced by Serbia with respect to Kosovo. The main contention was that the stateness problem ended with the partition of Serbia and the accompanied emergence of Kosovo. The purpose of the chapter was accordingly the demonstration of the outcome of the stateness problem that stressed the partition of the parent state and the formation of a new one. The instrument utilized by external powers to involve in the stateness problem in Serbia was studied. An international civil and security presence was deployed in Kosovo. The chapter examined the international process launched to determine the political future of Kosovo and aimed to demonstrate that the stateness problem in Serbia was eventually ended with the emergence of Kosovo. The independence of Kosovo was announced in association with the proposal prepared within the framework of the international political process. The chapter was intended to discover the role of external powers with regard to the emergence of Kosovo. The argument was that these powers influenced the emergence of Kosovo as several leading western powers supported the independence of Kosovo. The developments in Kosovo following the declaration of independence received attention in this chapter and, within this context, the international recognition of Kosovo was emphasized. The chapter made some concluding remarks that stressed that Kosovo emerged in the stateness problem in Serbia.
