Shaping Tomorrow Today – SDGs from multiple perspectives

Abstract

Digital media and technologies already influenced how we communicated and collaborated in the workplace prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adopting an interdisciplinary research approach and based on empirical data, we describe individual and organisational determinants shaping the usage of these media and technologies, such as digital literacies and the current implementation of digital tools within the specific organisational setting. Some key findings are: (i) individual perceptions and understandings of digitalisation vary across organisations, whereas overall only a few differences between for-profit and non-profit organisations were found; (ii) positive framework conditions are important for achieving digital literacies; (iii) the use of digital media and technologies in the workplace leads to an increasing overlap between work and private life spaces and more stress; and (iv) rules and guidelines are of central importance for employees. We expand the knowledge about the practical challenges and opportunities from the perspectives of executives and employees, and contribute to the wider discourse on digitalisation in professional life. Furthermore, we provide some examples of what the optimal implementation of new digital work steps and tools could look like.
