Zusammenfassung
The End of the fascist Empire was a complex procedure that happened within a few years and took place on different levels – in the Italian motherland, as well as in the colonies.
The End of the empire was caused among others by Italy joining the Second World War and the subsequent loss of the colonies in Ethiopia, in Libya in 1942. On the other hand, Italy was able to briefly stretch its colonial reach into the Balkans and Greece. When the war turned out to be in favor of the Allies in 1943, a civil war broke out in Italy and parts of the country became occupied by the German Wehrmacht.
The colonial heritage was still noticeable after the war in the context of decolonialisation. The Italian postwar government tried to „save“ some of its former colonies. This, however was made impossible by the treaty of Paris in 1947. During the 1970s, Italian citizens were expulsed from Libya under the Ghaddafi regime and at the end of the postcolonial development in the former colonies stood the failed states of Somalia and the post-Gaddafi fiasco in Libya.
