Zusammenfassung
In zwei zentralen Werken, „The Affluent Society“ (1958) und „The New Industrial State“ (1967), entwickelt der Ökonom John Kenneth Galbraith eine sozialkritische Wirtschaftstheorie auf Grundlage von Beobachtungen der US-amerikanischen Wirtschaft in der Nachkriegszeit, die neoklassischen Annahmen widerspricht. Seine zentralen Gedanken sind dabei, dass der Kapitalismus zu einer Überflussgesellschaft führe, die zwar private Wünsche erfülle und privaten Reichtum mehre, aber dabei Armut des Staates verursache und damit einen Wohlfahrtsstaat notwendig mache. Werbung (oder allgemeiner, Marketing) hat in diesem Gefüge eine Schlüsselfunktion als Kaufkraft-Managerin, die neue Konsumbedürfnisse wecken kann.
Für eine ausführliche Exegese der beiden Monografien Galbraiths sind Chirat (2020) sowie Fuller (2019) empfehlenswert, wie auch das Vorwort von James K. Galbraith, dem Sohn des Autors, ebenfalls Ökonom (z. B. Galbraith 2012), zur fünften Auflage des „New Industrial States“ (2007).
In der Werbeforschung wird Galbraith vor allem zu zwei Bereichen herangezogen, in die der vorliegende Beitrag einen Einblick bietet: Zur Beziehung zwischen Werbung, Konsum und Wirtschaftsentwicklung sowie zur Werbe- und Konsumkritik. Ein Überblick über ersteres Thema ist bei Seufert (2016) zu finden. Pollay (1986) ist ein prominentes Beispiel zum zweiten Thema, der sich mit negativen Externalitäten von Werbung aus Sicht von Konsument*innen auseinandersetzt. Im Zeitalter von Datafizierung und programmatischer Online-Werbung mit detailliertem User-Profiling bleiben Galbraiths Überlegungen zur Souveränität von Konsument*innen und der Macht der werbetreibenden Industrie relevant.
