Dynamics of Organizational Ambidexterity

Abstract

Part 6 of this dissertation is the fourth empirical study that examines OA as a dynamic construct. In line with study 3, this study adopts a micro-process perspective to analyze the process of change of OA. Consequently, study 4 also focuses on the multi-level dynamics that occur within the organization.

Notes

  1. 1.

See Part 3 of this dissertation and the introduced categorization of dynamic-oriented OA research with the four identified types: (1) dynamic ambidexterity from a (macro) process perspective, (2) dynamic ambidexterity from a capability-developing perspective, (3) dynamic ambidexterity from an enabling mechanisms perspective, and (4) dynamic ambidexterity as (micro-) practice/activity.

  2. 2.

In order to investigate changing investments in exploration and exploration, a pre-understanding and definition of OA in the specific context is required. See Section 3.1 in Part 6 for a definition of OA as a dynamic multi-level construct at EnvelGroup.

  3. 3.

Explicit positions and the names of the interviewees are anonymized for confidentiality purposes. As suggested by Yin (2017), direct interviewee statements or comments were not attributed to individuals

  4. 4.

Both study 2 (Part 5) and study 3 (Part 6) used an inductive procedure of generalizing from empirical observation without a priori theory and a phase of deductive reasoning to find aggregate dimensions.

  5. 5.

The “digital envelope” is a project that deals with the combination of personalized digital one-to-one codes on paper-based dispatch products.
