Die Beeinträchtigung der Kunststätten durch den kulturellen Übertourismus hat zu antitouristischen Bewegungen und zu sozialen Unruhen geführt (z. B. Seraphin et al. 2018b; Clancy 2019), besonders ausgeprägt in Spanien, Frankreich und Italien. Sie sind in den klassischen und sozialen Medien (Zeng und Gerritsen 2014) ausführlich unter dem Stichwort „Touristifikation“ oder „Touristophobia“ diskutiert worden (Milano 2017, 2018; Milano et al. 2018; Peeters et al. 2018, S. 29–30; Hughes 2018; Zerva et al. 2019).
