Zusammenfassung
Im Fokus der politiktheoretischen Debatte über Populismus steht die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Populismus und Demokratie. Politische Theoretiker*innen beantworten diese Frage jedoch sehr unterschiedlich: Einige attestieren dem Populismus eine ambivalente normative Bedeutung, während andere in Populismus eine Gefahr für die Demokratie oder aber ein wichtiges Potenzial für eine Demokratisierung des Status Quo sehen. Der Beitrag stellt die etablierten Positionen vor und zeigt die Gründe für diese divergierenden normativen Bewertungen auf. Anschließend werden zwei Aufgaben für die zukünftige politiktheoretische Debatte über Populismus konturiert. Erstens sollte die Auseinandersetzung über Möglichkeiten eines demokratischen Populismus weiterentwickelt werden. Zweitens sollten Ergebnisse der Forschung zu Ursachen des Erfolgs populistischer Akteur*innen stärker berücksichtigt werden.
