Abstract

In the 19th and 20th centuries China was in a period of historical upheaval. After a series of war defeats, imposed unequal treaties, and the establishment of foreign colonies on its own territory, the country lost its superiority and autonomy. The forced opening made the economy completely dependent on the West and Japan.
