Zusammenfassung
Lange Zeit hat die Volksrepublik China die Strategie eines „Wirtschaftswachstums um jeden Preis“ verfolgt und sieht sich heute einer Vielzahl an Problemen im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit ausgesetzt. Allerdings gibt es zunehmend Hinweise darauf, dass der Tipping Point der nicht-nachhaltigen Entwicklung in China erreicht ist. In der Tat lässt sich in der chinesischen Bevölkerung ein wachsendes Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstsein beobachten, und die chinesische Führung hat in den letzten Jahren ihre Anstrengungen im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit deutlich intensiviert. Auf Grundlage von Bedürfnistheorien führt der vorliegende Beitrag die steigende Relevanz von Nachhaltigkeitsthemen auf den zunehmenden Wohlstand in China zurück und wagt die These, dass das Reich der Mitte zukünftig eine Führungsrolle bei der Realisierung einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung einnehmen könnte.

So haben etwa verschiedene Akteure darauf hingewiesen, dass unter geeigneten Rahmenbedingungen ökonomische Funktionslogiken gezielt in den Dienst einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung gestellt werden können (etwa Beckmann et al. 2014; Kleinau und Lin-Hi 2014). Hinzu kommt, dass auf dem Weg zur Nachhaltigkeit eine Vielzahl von (globalen) Herausforderungen zu bewältigen ist, für welche bisher nicht immer schon praktikable Lösungsansätze existieren. Dies bedingt, dass die Realisierung des normativen Ideals der Nachhaltigkeit auch an soziale und technische Innovationen geknüpft ist, deren Entwicklung wiederum immer auch von ökonomischen Anreizen abhängt (Rennings 2000).
