Abstract

When I visited East Kalimantan for the second time, in early March 2001, some of the “knowledgeable men” (orang pintar), whom I had met in the previous year during travels along the Ohong river and in the foothills of the Meratus mountains, had gone. They had followed calls from the neighboring province of Central Kalimantan, where violence between the indigenous Dayak population and migrants from the island of Madura was raging.
