Zusammenfassung
Sehenswürdigkeiten sind nicht, sondern sie werden gemacht. Sie existieren nicht per se, sondern nur in der Auslegung des Vermarkters und in der Wahrnehmung des Betrachters. Sie sind konzipiert und gestaltet, mindestens reinterpretiert, wenn nicht überhaupt erfunden. Sehenswürdigkeiten werden deswegen als solche begriffen, weil sie, in Kooperation von Produzent und Konsument entstanden, hybride Schöpfungen sind, Träger verschiedener Kulturen, Ideen und Epochen. Besucher können sich in ihnen wieder erkennen und teilhaben an den großartigen Kulturleistungen der Menschheitsgeschichte. Das Bedürfnis des touristischen Reisens konstituiert sich in den Mittelschichten der Industriegesellschaften, und im Rahmen des Destination Branding werden die bereisten Welten gestaltet, sodass sie den Forderungen und Neigungen der Reisenden entsprechen. Es werden Bedürfnisse erfüllt, die in den touristischen Herkunftsländern entstehen. Zudem verdeutlichen touristische Praxen, dass Interesse weniger an Erkenntnis über die bereiste Welt besteht, als an einer Bestätigung der eigenen Lebenswelt, was am Urlaubsende durch die Rückkehr besiegelt wird.
