Zusammenfassung
Die Oberflächen der Innenwände eines Vakuumbehälters bestimmen ganz wesentlich die Eigenschaften des Vakuums im Behälter. Die Adsorptionsenergie bestimmt, welche und wie viele Moleküle an der Oberfläche haften und sich von ihr lösen (desorbieren) und dadurch in das Vakuum des Behälters eintreten. Im Festkörper der Vakuumwände gelöste Moleküle wandern zur inneren Oberfläche und desorbieren ebenfalls von ihr. Diese Ausgasung begrenzt den Druck, der in einer Vakuumkammer erreicht werden kann.
