Von Postmodernisierungsverlierern und der neuen Bedeutung von ‚Ethnizität‘

Zusammenfassung

Die Los Angeles Riots von 1992 sind bis heute Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Befassung, aber auch politischer Auseinandersetzungen. Herrscht über das auslösende Ereignis – die Misshandlung des jungen Schwarzen Rodney King durch Polizisten – weitgehende Einigkeit, sind die Gründe und mehr noch die aus den Ereignissen zu ziehenden Konsequenzen Gegenstand heftiger Auseinandersetzungen. Ist für die einen eine ‚übertriebene staatliche Fürsorgepolitik‘, die keine Eigeninitiative mehr zulasse (und die entsprechend bekämpft werden müsse), Grund für die Ausschreitungen, gelten für andere systematische Chancenungleichheiten als Grund (die entsprechend mit staatlicher Hilfe hergestellt werden müsse). Die Differenziertheit der den Riots vorausgehenden Ereignissen und die teils schwelenden, teils offenen ‚ethnischen‘ Konflikte in South Central Los Angeles blieben allerdings sowohl bei der medialen Beichterstattung als auch in der politischen Diskussion weitgehend unreflektiert. Diese Konflikte persistieren allerdings bis heute – insbesondere in Bezug auf die zunehmende Konkurrenz schwarzer Bevölkerung durch hispanische Bevölkerungsteile um Wohnraum und Arbeitsplätze.
