Zusammenfassung
Mit dem von David Bordwell und Kristin Thompson initiierten Neoformalismus/Kognitivismus wird einer der meistverbreiteten filmtheoretischen Ansätze vor dem Hintergrund seines Entstehungskontextes dargestellt. Betrachtet werden nacheinander die theoretischen Grundannahmen und die stilistischen und narratologischen Konzepte der neoformalistischen Filmanalyse sowie das kognitivistische Modell des Filmverstehens und der Filminterpretation. Am Ende werden bekannte Einwände gegen das Paradigma diskutiert und weitere Kritikpunkte formuliert.

In einem 26 Jahre nach Narration in the Fiction Film veröffentlichten Essay ist Bordwell auf seine Verwendung des Fabula-Begriffs zurückgekommen. Darin schließt er sich der Kritik verschiedener Wahrnehmungs- und Kognitionspsychologen an der in dem Buch formulierten Vorstellung an, die Zuschauer würden während der Filmsichtung mental eine vollständige Fabula ausbilden. Tatsächlich sei ein solches Konstrukt nicht Gegenstand normaler Filmrezeption, sondern vielmehr ein Artefakt der Rekonstruktion durch die Theoretikerin (Bordwell 2011). Die Differenz zwischen rekonstruierter Fabula und realem Rezeptionssubstrat zeigt sich etwa an Fehlerinnerungen im Rezeptionsprozess wie im Fall von Mildred Pierce (Michael Curtiz, USA 1945) (Bordwell 1992).
