Teacher, Preacher, Politician – The Threefold Office of Christ as a Key to the Thoughts of Comenius

Abstract

In this introductory essay to the second part of the present publication, the author gives a short portrait of his father, a preacher and a theologian of Utrecht University, Jan Marinus van der Linde. But this is only of secondary importance. It is the author’s main intention to present Comenius’ pansophic idea of the world as one school, one church and one state of God. As a teacher, Comenius emphasises the importance of knowledge and piety as necessary to prepare for eternal life. As a preacher, Comenius points to the faith and example of Christ that makes it possible to recover the paradise on earth. As a political thinker, Comenius is committed to a fairer and socially engaged society based on the precepts of Christianity. But Comenius is convinced that man cannot change things by himself. Only Christ, the new Adam, is capable of restoring everything and only he can show man the way.

Zusammenfassung

In seinem Einführungsessay zum zweiten Teil der vorliegenden Publikation gibt der Autor zunächst ein kurzes Porträt seines Vaters, des Pastors und Theologen der Utrecher Universität, Jan Marinus van der Linde. Dies ist ihm jedoch nur von sekundärer Wichtigkeit. Bedeutsamer erscheint es ihm, die pansophische Idee der Welt als einer Schule, einer Kirche und eines Gottesstaates vorzustellen. Als Lehrer stellt Comenius die Bedeutung des Wissens und der Frömmigkeit heraus, wie sie für die Vorbereitung auf das ewige Leben notwendig sind. Als Pastor verweist er auf den Glauben und auf das Beispiel Jesu Christi. Christus macht es möglich, das Paradies auf Erden wiederherzustellen. Als politischer Denker wünscht sich Comenius eine faire und sozial verpflichtete Gesellschaft auf der Grundlage des Christentums. Er ist dabei davon überzeugt, dass die Menschheit nicht in der Lage ist, aus eigener Kraft die Verhältnisse zum Besseren zu wenden. Nur Christus kann das, indem er den Menschen die richtigen Wege zeigt.
