Überblick
Technologieorientierte akademische Spin-offs bergen eine große Chance der wirtschaftlichen Verwertung von Wissen. Die Gründer sind jedoch häufig naturwissenschaftlich oder technisch ausgebildet und besitzen wenig bis keine Erfahrung in der Industrie. Sie sind auch nach dem Unternehmensstart sehr produkt- und innovationsorientiert, während wichtige wirtschaftliche Aspekte der Gründung, etwa eine nachhaltige und ganzheitliche Zielmarktanalyse, oftmals vernachlässigt werden. Fehler in der Anfangszeit eines jungen Unternehmens können sich jedoch noch Jahre später auf dessen Leistungsfähigkeit auswirken, insbesondere wenn die Ressourcen des Spin-offs stark limitiert sind. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden in zwei Fällen die entwicklungsbezogenen Herausforderungen dargestellt und analysiert, denen insbesondere Spin-offs aus einer akademischen Mutterorganisation gegenüberstehen. Beide Unternehmen haben bereits im Rahmen der Gründung elementare Aufgaben vernachlässigt. Gleichzeitig wurde Wissen, das für die langfristig erfolgreiche Führung des Unternehmens benötigt wurde, nicht entwickelt oder mittels entsprechender Mitarbeiter integriert. Während dies in einem Fall zu einer kontinuierlichen Schwächung und schließlich zur Insolvenz des Spin-offs führte, zeigte sich im zweiten Fall das Risiko eines solchen Verhaltens erst sehr spät, resultierte aber schließlich ebenfalls in der Insolvenz. Durch den Vergleich beider Unternehmen wird der Einfluss verschiedener Managementaktivitäten auf die Leistungsfähigkeit von Spin-offs veranschaulicht. Daraus werden Empfehlungen für die Führung von akademischen Ausgründungen abgeleitet.
