Zusammenfassung
Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) ist eine transnationale Umwelt-NGO und beschreibt sich selbst als „the world’s largest grassroots environmental network“ (FoEI 2011a). Die Organisation wurde 1969 in den USA von David Brower gegründet, der zuvor lange Jahre den Sierra Club geleitet hatte. Brower verließ den Sierra Club im Streit über Kampagnentaktiken und -ziele und wollte mit Friends of the Earth (FoE) eine neue Umweltorganisationen gründen, die international ausgerichtet, dezentral organisiert und auch publizistisch tätig sein sollte (Wapner 1996: 121 – 122).
