Zusammenfassung
Schwefeldioxid wurde bereits in alten Kulturkreisen (Assyrien, China, Griechenland) als Räuchermittel „zum Austreiben boser Geister“, wahrscheinlich auch zur Desinfektion benutzt (Homer, Odyssee XXII, 481). Die alten Römer kannten den „Dunst des Schwefels“ als Schönungsmittel für Wein (Plinius, Naturalis historia XIV, 129). Nach Ansicht anderer Autoren [1] ist es aber zweifelhaft, in welcher Form Schwefel benutzt wurde.
