Structural and Biochemical Aspects of Parathyroid Gland Function in Animals

  • Chapter
Endocrine System

Part of the book series: Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals ((LABORATORY))

Abstract

Parathyroid glands are present in all air-breathing vertebrates. Phylogenetically, parathyroids first appear in amphibians coincidentally with the transition from aquatic to terrestrial life. It has been suggested that the appearance of parathyroid glands in tetrapods may have arisen from the need to protect against the development of hypocalcemia and the necessity to maintain skeletal integrity in terrestrial animals, which are often in a relatively low-calcium/high-phosphorus environment (Copp 1970).
