Zusammenfassung
Der französische Kliniker Widal sah den Nachweis von Antikörpern gegen Typhusbacillen im Serum von Typhuskranken als beweisend für das Vorliegen der Erkrankung an. Im Gegensatz hierzu deuteten Gruber und Durham das Auftreten von Antikörpern gegen Typhusbacillen im Serum vom Kaninchen, denen diese Bacillen injiziert worden waren, als Ausdruck der Immunität. Heute erkennen wir in dem Auftreten von Antikörpern nach Infektionen oder künstlicher Immunisierung eine wichtige physiologische Funktion des lebenden Organismus, nämlich eine Reaktion gegen Antigene in Form fremder Eiweiße oder anderer parenteral zugeführter hochmolekularer Substanzen. (Hätte man diese selben Substanzen per os zugeführt, dann wären sie von Fermenten des Darmtraktes zerstört worden, ohne daß eine Antikörperbildung zu ihrer Beseitigung notwendig gewesen wäre.)
