The City and Its Sciences

Abstract

This comment on Faludi’s paper focuses on three issues: the definition of strategic planning, the concept of planning doctrine, and the uneasy relationship between planning and urban design, that is, between planners and architects. In Faludi’s paper the three issues are interrelated in various ways, but to capture these relations adequately it is necessary to recall Faludi’s other contributions, in particular his latest book (Faludi and Van der Valk, 1994).
