SIFT (Searching In Free Text), a retrieval system developed by the Norwegian public sector is described. Its general relevance and applications in medicine are discussed, followed by a description and analysis of a specific example — a test of SIFT using “Felleskatalogen”, a catalogue of all proprietary drugs in Norway.
