Abstract
Whereas naturalists have surmised for a long time the intuitive results of competition between species, theoretical models for dealing with this problem are relatively recent. Classical population dynamics dealt with constant competition parameters. The introduction of models which allowed for genetic adaptation within a species according to the pressures exerted on it by the presence of competing species had to wait for a union between population dynamics and population genetics.
