Abstract
Synopsis. When certain points of a system are constrained to follow a randomly undulating profile, the spectral density of its response depends on the dynamic properties of the system, the spectral density of the profile, and the velocity of traversal. The relationship connecting response spectral density to profile spectral density is first developed for two important special cases: (a) where there is a single profile-imposed displacement, and (b) where two displacements are imposed by a single profile. It is then shown that the form of the profile spectrum is deducible in each case by consideration of response spectra alone.
