Hemodynamic and Ventricular Dynamic Investigations of Nitrate Tolerance

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Tolerance to a drug is present if either an increasing dose is necessary in order to obtain a therapeutic effect or there is no efficacy at all. Normally this tolerance disappears after the treatment is discontinued and develops again during a renewed therapy. It is of decisive importance whether a tolerance exists with regard to a particular single effect of the drug or for the therapeutically desirable overall effect. Self-tolerance is the condition whereby a reduction in efficacy develops for the same substance, whereas cross-tolerance is when another similarly acting substance is ineffective.
