Abstract
Trauma is the greatest cause of mortality in the under 40 year old age group in the Western world. Just as important as the high mortality, is the huge burden on the State, as well as friends and relatives of the maimed survivors, many of whom need constant care for the rest of their lives. Trauma is increasingly becoming a multi-disciplinary specialty. The initial management is usually undertaken by the emergency room physician, as well as a surgeon and anesthetist or intensivist. Other specialists such as orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons are often consulted after the initial resuscitation.
