Abstract
In this paper we demonstrate some of the advantages gained by describing graphics systems designs in terms of a highly modular reference model. Furthermore we describe how such a reference model assists in the characterisation and analysis of intra and inter graphics systems relationships. Much of the work presented here forms part of the Modular Graphics Systems Project, currently being funded by the Science and Engineering Research Council, which has defined a set of configurable modules [1,2] which can be used to emulate existing and proposed graphics systems.
